Lindsay suspect is force-fed

0 Comments | Sunday Mirror, Nov 22, 2009 | by NICK OWENS

THE man accused of killing British teacher Lindsay Hawker in Japan is being force-fed by doctors to try to get him to confess.

Tatsuya Ichihashi, 30, has been on hunger strike and has refused to speak to detectives since his capture 12 days ago.

But yesterday it emerged that loner Ichihashi was injected with nutritional supplements after starting to become seriously ill.

Lindsay, 22, from Brandon, Warks, was found dead in a sand- filled bathtub at Ichihashi’s flat in Tokyo in 2007.

Ichihashi had been stalking her for week. He went on the run and had plastic surgery before his arrest at the port of Osaka

VA hospital to get facelift

0 Comments | Philadelphia Daily News, November, 2009 | by DAVID GAMBACORTA gambacd@phillynews.com 215-854-5994

The Philadelphia VA Medical Center is about to undergo a huge face-lift – and quite a few nips and tucks, too.

About 40 renovation and construction projects totaling $40 million are scheduled to unfold at the West Philadelphia center, on University Avenue near Baltimore Avenue, during the next 18 months, said Dale Warman, a spokesman for the Philadelphia VA.

Chief among the projects is a $6 million remodel of the center’s emergency department, which is being funded by the federal stimulus package.

The number of exam bays in the emergency department will double to 20, and a separate area for vets with behavioral-health problems is to be established.

Work on the emergency department, which is expected to begin in a few weeks, should take about 15 months to…

Charming ‘Up’ among new DVDs

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 20, 2009

This overview of new movies on DVD leads off with one of 2009′s best, another blue ribbon winner from Pixar.

“Up” (Disney/Pixar/Blu-ray, 2009, PG, four discs, $45.99). Critics are a cynical lot, but I’m not sure I’ve encountered any who don’t have high expectations every time a new Pixar film is announced. And once again, Pixar has topped itself with an inventive, touching and funny animated feature that’s better than most of the year’s live-action films.

Unless you spent the summer in a cave, you know this one’s about an aging grouch (perfectly voiced by Edward Asner) who hoists his home aloft with balloons to travel to South America, as an overeager Scout tags along. The creatures they encounter are wonderfully developed characters, alternately hilarious or scary, and the film genuinely tugs at the heart.

As you might expect, it’s also loaded with eye candy, especially in this high-definition Blu-ray edition. Keep telling yourself it’s animation; some of it looks like photography.

Extras: widescreen, alternate endings, audio commentary, featurettes, short cartoon: “Partly Cloudy,” game; digital and DVD copies of the film (also on two-disc DVD, $39.99, or one-disc DVD, $29.99)

“Monsters, Inc.” (Disney/Pixar/Blu-ray, 2001, G, four discs, $39.99)

Education Tops List of Barriers to Career Satisfaction, According to an eLearners.com Survey

Market Wire, November, 2009

A recent survey conducted by eLearners.com
( http://www.elearners.com ), a web resource of EducationDynamics, which
connects prospective students with online colleges found that
the main barriers to job success are education, time, money and the lack of
job opportunities. The recent survey polled people who took part in the
eLearners.com Empowerment Tour, an RV tour which traveled the U.S. from
June to September 2009 offering free career coaching and opportunities to
apply for full-tuition scholarships and internships.

Sixty-one percent of people who participated in the survey said education
is very important to them in changing their present job situation. Of the
respondents, 32 percent only have a high school diploma or GED, 22 percent
have an associate’s degree and 28 percent have a bachelor’s
degree .

“What we heard during the Empowerment Tour and are seeing through these
results is that people want to go back to school, but enrolling is a giant
leap that many people are reticent to take,” said Terrence Thomas,
Executive Vice President of Marketing for eLearners.com. “However,
statistics prove that if you have a college education you are less likely
to be unemployed and more likely to have a higher salary. And what makes
it even more of an imperative is that 76 percent of the fastest growing
jobs in the U.S. today require a college degree making a degree a
necessity, not a luxury.”

In addition to citing education as a roadblock to getting the job they
want, survey respondents also noted experience and age as prohibiting
factors. About one third said their age is keeping them from landing the
job they want, while about 35 percent said their lack of experience is
holding them back. Beyond age and experience, respondents cited money,
time and the lack of available jobs as reasons for their current job
situation.

Of those who responded to the survey, 36 percent are currently employed but
searching for new opportunities and 31 percent have been unemployed for
more than a year.

To make inroads into this dilemma, eLearners.com created the nationwide
Empowerment Tour, which featured free career coaching. Nearly half of
those who participated in the career coaching said they now feel optimistic
about their career path and are motivated to start the process of improving
their careers.

To enable more people to benefit from the career coaches experiences from
the Empowerment Tour, the three career coaches put together a free “Book of
Wisdom.” The book is a compilation of advice based on common questions the
career coaches received during the tour when they met with nearly 1,000
Americans who are struggling with their careers. From the sessions, the
career coaches have extracted the most relevant and practical advice for a
career hunt or transition in today’s economic environment. The book can be
found at http://www.careerstimulus.com .

Your article about saving money with a Mac encourages us to cut cable TV service (“Save Money with Your Mac,” October 2009). Watching online video and downloading TV shows and movies is a sure way not to save money using our Mac or PC. Where we live, we get 20GB of Internet bandwidth a month. It’s $10 per gigabyte if we go over. Our Internet bill would be through the roof
