Nobel laureates call for gender balance in science

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Dec 7, 2009 | by Malin Rising Associated Press

STOCKHOLM — The two female winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in medicine on Sunday urged scientific institutions to change their career structures to help more women reach top positions.

Americans Elizabeth H. Blackburn and Carol W. Greider said as many women as men start out in science but are often unable to advance after having children because of a lack of flexibility.

“The career structure is very much a career structure that has worked for men,” Blackburn told The Associated Press at the sidelines of a press conference in Stockholm.

“But many women, at the stage when they have done their training, really want to think about family … and they just are very daunted by the career structure. Not by the science, in which they are doing really well.”

The two laureates spoke to reporters ahead of this week’s Nobel Prize ceremony. They will share this year’s $1.4 million medicine prize with countryman Jack W. Szostak for discovering how chromosomes protect themselves as cells divide — work that has inspired experimental cancer therapies and may offer insights into aging.

It is the first time two women have shared a single Nobel science prize

Home Service to Offer Water Service Line Protection Plan to Select Homeowners in South Carolina

PR Newswire, Dec 2, 2009

HOMEOWNERS CAN NOW SEEK RELIEF FROM HIGH HOME REPAIR COSTS

MIAMI, Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ — Home Service, a leading provider of home emergency repair programs with hundreds of thousands of policies in place, is doing their share to keep homeowners protected. Previously reaching customers through partner utility companies, Home Service today announced that they will be offering their protection program directly to select area homeowners.

The water service line is the pipe that brings freshwater into a home and is the homeowner’s responsibility to maintain it. On most properties, this line starts from the curb or well casing of the property and goes all the way into the home connecting to the water heater, sinks, showers and more. Temperature changes, shifting soil or the age of the line can all be causes of damage. Many times this will result in a loss of water pressure or a loss of water altogether for cooking, bathing and other household needs. In other instances, effects will not be noticed until there is a spike in the water bill due to leakage under the yard.

Accredited by the Better Business Bureau, Home Service is able to offer emergency solutions that protect homeowners from the hassle and expense of unexpected repairs. “Emergencies do happen and unfortunately, there’s very little someone can do to prepare for them,” says Jonathan King, Chief Executive Officer of Home Service

Downes vows to clear debt

CASH-STRAPPED Hinckley United Football Club have been handed a two-month stay of execution by the high court after chairman Kevin Downes guaranteed payment of a pounds 200,000 outstanding debt to the Inland Revenue.

He has 56 days to stump up the cash or the Blue Square North promotion chasers could go out of business.

“We just want to get it out of the way,” said. Downs “The team are playing brilliantly and we just want to focus on that. The money will be paid by Christmas.”

The Knitters will return to London’s High Court on January 27 when the case is expected to conclude. If the re-mortgaging process doesn’t raise all the cash Downes and his father, club president Frank, have vowed to cash in insurance policies to clear the debt.

“Dad and I will guarantee any shortfall,” he added.”The judge said he would give us until January 27 to pay though which is brilliant

1pounds 45m vision for town; RESIDENTS CAN HAVE A SAY ON AMBITIOUS BUILDING PLANS

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Dec 8, 2009

Byline: NEIL MCKAY

CIVIC bosses have unveiled details of a pounds 45m scheme to transform part of a former steel town.

Despite protests over the siting of a new academy and sports centre at Belle Vue, Consett, County Durham, the county council remains committed to building a 1,500 academy and new sports centre at that location.

And yesterday council bosses revealed details of the plans, which includes the relocation of Consett’s War Memorial as well as the town’s football and rugby clubs and the demolition of the Civic Centre in Medomsley Road, the town’s Belle Vue leisure centre and the swimming pool opposite.

In their place the academy will be built, formed by the closure of two of Consett’s secondary schools at Moorside and Blackfyne, and a new sports centre. The council proposes to build the academy on the site of Consett football club’s main stand at Ashdale Road, as well as on the adjoining car park and leisure centre. The new sports centre would be built partially on what is now the civic centre. The War Memorial, currently in the Civic Centre car park, would be moved to a more prominent location.

Steve Howell, head of sport and leisure at Durham County Council, said: “Specific details of the type of leisure facilities to be provided will be finalised following public consultation. “Initial indications suggest the facilities could include a 25-metre swimming pool, sports hall, outdoor all-weather pitches and tennis courts, a gym, squash courts, aerobic and indoor bowling facilities and a new function room.” Officials from Consett AFC, who play in the First Division of the SkilltrainingLtd Northern League, have already said they would welcome a new ground to replace the dilapidated Belle Vue Park.

Council bosses say Consett’s current sports centre and swimming pool are outdated.

Opponents of the proposals cite the loss of green space and an increase in traffic.

From today people in Consett will have the chance to see outline plans for the Belle Vue site

DRAYCOTE Fishery, one of the most productive waters in the area for big trout, is closing for the whole of 2010 to facilitate alterations to the visitor centre and car parking. Fishery owners Severn Trent Water will be making public their plans for the scheme shortly but have assured current fishery managers Margaret and Keith Causer that the venue, near Rugby, will re-open for fishing in 2011. “From my own point of view, my lease period finishes at the end of the year, so I can only assume that this will be the end of my connection with the fishery,” said Keith. “Margaret and I would like to thank all of our customers, suppliers and staff who have given their support to the fishery. We have really appreciated all their help and loyalty.” I understand that if anyone is owed gift vouchers, then Severn Trent Water will honour them; they can be contacted on 01788 811107.

Should anyone want to contact Keith or Margaret, the lodge number (01788 812 018) will be operative for a little while longer. QTHE Sensas Challenge at Barston Lakes is once again showing the silver fish potential of Nigel Harrhy’s Solihull day-ticket fishery, with Kian Wardle leading the way with an excellent 41-8-0 of mainly skimmers last weekend, with weights to nearly 20lb this weekend as well. Kamasan rod Kian ‘balled it’ with groundbait and joker and polefished bloodworm and caster over the top. Catches like this have persuaded bailiff Pete Bailey to run four open matches starting this Sunday and with further competitions on December 13, January 10 and Januar 24.As Barston is shallow, bites becom harder to come by as winter sets in, but the key is that Pete will be allowing bloodworm and joker, with legering and feeder fishing banned. For more information, call Pete on 07966 779909. DAVID HOPPE has been enjoying some great sport on the Anglian Water trout reservoirs where pike fishing is intermittently permitted – and not just with pike. In fact his most notable capture has been a 7lb 8oz rainbow trout (above) – believed to be the biggest rainbow of the season from Grafham. The fish took a deadbait fished by the valve tower. He’s also managed a 6lb 6oz brown trout from Pitsford, plus a few pike of course! All the fish were returned.

TUNNEL Barn Farm Fishery has released details of its Christmas match activity and there’s plenty going on. Things kick off nicely at the Shrewley water with the Boxing Day Bash on December 26, with a rather tasty draw of no peg fees and a 100 per cent payout! There are three opens from December 27-29, with a pairs match on December 30, all nicely rounded off with a pounds 40 per pair contest on New Year’s Eve . For more details, call 01926 842188. aARDEN Fisheries, located at SniUerfield Fruit Farm between Alcester and Warwick off the M40, is beginning a series of open matches starting this weekend and then running every Saturday until further notice. Owner Steve Dawkes plans to spread the matches around The Oak, Foxes and his silver fish water Archers, with catches of 30lb-40lb expected to be needed to win. New Trial Data Demonstrates Polaris Wireless Leads Industry With Accurate Location for Challenging Indoor and Dense Urban Environments

Business Wire, Dec 02, 2009

Next Generation Solution Supports All Major Cellular Air Interfaces
Including 4G LTE

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Polaris Wireless, the global leader in high accuracy, software-based
location solutions, today announced its Polaris Wireless Location
Signatures (Polaris WLS) Hybrid technology established new benchmarks
in location performance, including better accuracy, reduced time to fix
and improved battery consumption, for indoor and dense urban
environments according to field trials conducted by major wireless
carriers globally. These trials, performed in multiple continents,
demonstrate that Polariss Hybrid solution performs better than A-GPS
alone in both indoor and complex environments, such as dense urban areas
with high rise buildings and many signal obstructions. In addition,
Polaris Wireless announced that its solution is 4G LTE ready with the
Hybrid solution supporting multiple cellular air interfaces (2G/3G/4G)
in a single platform in support of carriers multi-mode services and
devices.

The ability to locate wireless handsets and devices in indoor
environments is particularly important since that is where most users
originate voice and data calls, said Professor Per K. Enge, a leading
researcher at Stanford Universitys GPS Laboratory. Location
performance in places like high rise office buildings and indoor
shopping malls is critical to meeting consumer and enterprise demand as
well as emergency call requirements. Further, with the established trend
of mobile wireless replacing landline services, the importance of
accurate, timely and efficient location indoors will continue to rapidly
grow.

The advantage of the Polaris Wireless solution is that it works well in
non line-of-sight, cluttered environments with indoors being a
particularly challenging environment for cellular location systems,
said Dr. Marty Feuerstein, CTO of Polaris Wireless. WLS capitalizes on
complex obstructions and shadowing to improve location performance. In
addition, the Polaris Wireless Hybrid location solution for 4G LTE
networks enables truly global and ubiquitous location-aware applications
that offer consumers far more than todays turn-by-turn navigation.

North American carriers have recently conducted 3G location system
trials, testing indoor and outdoor wireless location performance over an
urban trial area of 10 square kilometers. Polaris out performed other
solutions with a consistent accuracy of 47 to 59 meters versus 230 to
250 meters at 67th percentile
